I have read that these guys can handle brackish and even saltwater condititions. Is that true? Has anyone kept these guys before? Has anyone kept them in brackish water? What is there temperment like? Would I be able to keep them in my brackish 75? I tried googling them and searching on MFK but I couldn't find much. Help me please! :)
 
They wont be able to tolerate BW or SW any better than any onther CA cichlid. They also get big and mean IME, and would probably be quite agressive to several of the fish you have, and also would eat the puffers. In a 75 tankmates would have to be minimal
 
Then why did I read somewhere that they live in brackish marshes?
 
Yes they can handle brackish conditions but they will need your 75 gallon all to themselves since they can grow to about 14"

They can handle brackish water just fine. I have had a few. One was my all time most agro fish ever. I tuly hated him for it too. When I gave it away I cried, simply cause I really wanted to drop him in a basket full of rabid cats.
 
yeah they are pretty hardy fish but dont put to much salt in the tank..and yes that 75 is gonna be good enough for only one mayan

That tank is full now some of those fish will have to be culled ( by each other or moved by you.I'm guessing the puffers will be the decing fish.One puffer alone will ruin the 75 co-habitants.
 
I have kept them in a cichlid community tank freshwater never heard of keeping them brackish but they are mean. Mine fights all other tankmates no matter if it can win or not it starts alot of fights it can't finish but the myan has not killed any tankmates just a few scales here and there.If he was the biggest in the tank i think he would kill the others but the myan is the runt right now.
