10" male all on his own in a spacious 4ft tank,

what dithers are able to swim faster than him and provide a nice look for the tank ?

ive heard silver dollars and danio's go well, but i do not have too much money to waste so i would rather have some confidence before i end up giving him fast swimming expensive dinner =P

thankyou in advance

would it help to kill the aggression towards the dithers if i got a small aggressive cichlid like a convict that would hold its own and help take some aggression from the mayan?

Danio's are cheaper than silver dollars around .99 here while silver dollars are almost 5.00 bucks here. The only thing is the size of your fish thats why i always throw in 3-5 female convicts they are tough and are more fun to watch.

what if they females are really small ? do they have to be of particular size?
there is a rocky outcrop where small fish can hide and not be bothered if that helps

Well you could use larger males to i have three male convicts in with a really nasty texas cichlid and nobody bothers each other.the covicts are 3-5 inches.I never put females under 3in with a fish that large though so i really dont know how that would work but i would say 3+ with caves should work they are fast and clever and dont stress out that easy.

i did think to have convicts, but i wasnt sure if THEY would attack the mayan =P
i know if u have more fish in a tank the aggression is evenly spread. atm he charges at the glass and flares up at humans because he has nothing inside his tank to get attention from, or give attention too etc.
i think he is bord =P

Convicts are fine together.the only thing you do not want to do is have males and females together than if they pair up it wont matter if your mayan is a dovii they will attack it.

so i want either male or female convicts,
and not a pair?
any other cichlids that could put up with him?
there is a nice 8" dempsy i could get hold of, unsure of its sex. but i was worried mayan would batter it, or it would batter mayan.
the mayan seems to have his area of the tank where he has moved all the substrate.

ive never introduced two large cichlids together so im unsure of the consequenses
