Looks to be a nice one.

Takes years to grow, though....

i do lots of water changes and feed him hikari cichlid gold and freezedried krill, the little bastards growing like a weed lol. how long will it take to grow him to around 8 inches?

Was he picked on a little? He looks like a future beast. These guys are very underestimated in the fish game. They are very good looking fish and have no trouble hanging with some of the top aggressive fish. They are also great wet pets

no he wasnt picked on hes actually the second toughest in the tank next to my dempsey, he dominates my trimac/flowerhorn mix

Rapps actually just sold out of some really nice mayans. Wish I had got some. Take care of that lil guy. Very cool fish

i will , i love my fish i give them the best lol, one thing tho i had 2 mayans which i gave away the other one, the other one was very silver with no stripes and a black dot by the tail and a big old black dot in the middle of its body, it also had some green scales on its gill plates, do some mayans just look different like that or was it a different fish....it was a confusing situation for me lol

Mayans can look very different depending on location.
I saw a few in Cenote Eden that were lacking any stripes and over a foot in length.

Some in the salt water canals have dark colored stripes, over very red body, as they are in the mangroves of Isla de Mujeres.
By the way, much of their brighter colors don't show until they are older and larger, mine started to redden after 8"
And in Escondido I at first, mistook them for synspillum because the posterior markings were very similar, and head shape seemed almost Vieja like.
They are very hardy, tolerate many water conditions, and breed easily. I had a pair breed in a 150 gal cichlid community and defend the fry very successfully against all others.

wow and I just found out they got a nice set of teeth, is it possible they can have the big dot in the middle of the body?
