Hi everyone, I'm hoping that someone can tell me something about Mayan cichlids, first hand knowledge. Also does anyone have any pics of breeding colors and info about how to sex them? Also should I keep them in fresh, brackish or salt water? Thanks for the help.

I have had them spawn in my tanks, and I have snorkeled with them in the cenotes of Mexico. They will spawn at around 4", but in nature only the largest and most robust males get the females.
They are very hardy, can handle saline conditions ( I've seen then in full strength seawater in Isla de Mujeres), and are omnivores.
Females have a dark blotch in the dorsal, and are usually smaller at the same age as males, and can have a more torpedo shaped profile.
Most of the ones in the video below are females, and subordinate males. The dark blotch of the females will be obvious.

Awesome video, duanes! It really shows the fish in their natural environment. What are the smaller fish swimming amongst them? Just curious.

Yes duanes, your are the guru.:) That video and your info are totally awesome. Thanks, do you have any pictures of your fish in breeding colors.

I believe the small schooling fish are Gambusia yucatana.
Here is another video of a small cenote near Azul with the same live bearers, uropthalmus and a few JDs. There were also some Rhamdia catfish, but they disappeared under rocks, as soon as I entered the water.
