So we all know fishless cycling is faster in most cases since there is an abundant source of ammonia so the BB starts to grow right away.

But there is no source for nitrite so you have to get the first bacteria colonized before you can start on the second.

I have looked and there is no source of pure nitrite, but they do have sodium-nitrite and potassium-nitrite with sodium being the easiest to get.

Any one here want to give some feed back on this idea. I might see if I can find a meat store and buy a small amount of NaNO2 from them.

Not sure if I would want to risk doing this with rays.

Just use old filter pads or bags of media. I have a bunch of bags of media in my sumps, I just steal one from each sump when I'm setting up a new tank. I stock slow so it always works great.

I mean I know about that, i know about the products. The point was to talk about this as an option to speed up fishless cycling. Lets face it people on here have multiple tanks or massive over filtraiton, they know they can move stuff from one to the ohter. I have only cycled 1 tank in my history, after that it was just mini cycles with used media.

But not everyone is like this sometimes its someone new to the hobby who wants to get started, and if you going to recommend cycling over bb in a bottle I would hope you would recommend fishless.

But talk like this is what gets us advances, think about how crazy it must have sounded when people first started fisheless cycling.

Anyone think the fact that its sodium nitrite would make it a problem? I think sodium is just salt, so there could be a problem if you end up raising the salinity to high, potassium nitrite would be idea since i am not aware of any problems caused by high levels of potassium on the bio filter.
