Hey guys, As most know I'm ordering a bichir soon. But I'm wondering if it's worth getting a QT tank that I won't really have space for. I have heard that bichirs can be carriers of IP and such

Would it be better to quarantine or would a MB and salt dip be a fairly effective treatment before acclimation?

Any thoughts?

I don't quarantine, but my LFS is wet spot. I know they quarantine their fish before they sell them for quite a while. I know this definitely isn't best practice though.

Quarantine. I've gotten fish from some of the best vendors on this site and even they can miss something.

Plus say down the road you want to get another poly/fish you may put the older poly at risk without qt'ing and treating the new fish.

You can get 99 healthy fish...that 100th could cause you a huge headache not worth it in my opinion. Even a 5 or 10 gal with an airstone is better than nothing

It seems the consensus is QT. I will try the salt dip too.
I'll see what my tank options are this weekend when I visit the LFS

Qt and salt are fine for polys. They will get bichir worms and internal parasites. In this case MB won't help.

So better to qt and monitor.

yup QT if you are concerned about IP's, MB and salt won't affect internal problems. If you have a concern of that you should look into metro and prazi as effective methods of internal treatment brah. Being over there I'd say you have a higher chance of getting WC polys so I'd definitely QT.

The few times i didnt qt it bit me in the butt and i introduced callumanus worms and ich into my tanks.

Qt'ing saved me from introducing IP, ich and some weird crustacean thing on a wc poly into my tanks....im a believer lol
