So I got a buddy who's got a 400 with a mbu puffer and a ray both are grown. I advised kinda agaisnt this but to each his own. My concern besides the mbu mistaking the rays eyes as snails is when he feeds the mbu puffer clams and the puffer breaks the clams apart of the bottom could the left over shells if not removed cut and damage the ray at the bottom?? I assume yes but looking for advice on this

I'm far from a ray expert but I've kept them over the years. I often fed shellfish and didn't get too fussy about cleaning the shells out of the tank. I never noticed that it bothered the rays but I also wouldn't have thought it might have been a good idea to pair an MBU w/ a ray. There's probably a difference worth noting and that would be that an MBU breaks shells into sharp fragments where I had not noticed that w/ rays.

Id day the mubu itself is more detrimental than the old shells. Forget 1 feeding and the ray will most likely be cookie cuttered. Goes both ways tho also. The ray can easily end the mubus life lol…. Ive had a few fish stabbed over the yrs. Some live…. Some dont. As with any “monster community” tanks its russian roullete in most cases.

Thats kinda what I told him, he said he feeds every other day but I feel the mbu would need to be fed everyday not to be crazy, my other concern was when he drops the clams in if the ray swims over the clans thinking he can eat them abd the mbu is in the middle of eating or trying to eat them is where the chaos can happen

I don't keep either species, never have, and don't know much about them but I do know of a mbu and several rays that have lived together for many years. They live in a lfs and the tank has a 8x6 footprint (I think), so relatively large. There is a short clip of the tank in this video

So it can be done but I don't know anything about the feeding schedule or care for them.
