Right I have been planning the last few days about getting a mbu. After I've moved out some plecos and cichlids out of several tanks, I will pick one up. Few questions, I've heard bottom dwellers are not to good to mix with them. I have some clown loaches in the larger tank and some blue loaches in the grow out will they be ok with sufficient hiding places. Please feel free to name successful tank mates for a mbu was also thinking a fire eel once he is moved to the larger tank would this be ok ?? Also pics of your mbu's and set ups would be appreciated.

It will mostly come down to the personality of your MBU, I had mine, which was 24" in with a ray and he chewed up the tail all the way past the barb. So for me, rays were not a good tank mate for him. There is a member here with a MBU and bunch of rays and he hasn't had any problems. I had a smaller MBU at 12" that was ok with my fish, never had any issues. He did mistake my girlfriends thumb for a piece of shrimp thou will reviving a peacock bass, but other than that, he was good, at least for the time I had it. So for you, it will be trial and error, for some people it was an expensive trial and error, for others it went well. MBU's like to "test" everything in the tank with their mouths. I had a big piece of texas rock and he chewed on it all the time and you could hear it, pretty neat. :)

Cheers mate, I'm going to get a small one and grow it out in a community set up I really want a large shoal of small fish such as mollies or tetras a few nice sized loaches and a nice chunky fire eel. Suppose will just have to wait and see, have you any pics of your set up

I tried that with a bunch of 3-4" Flagtails, he ate them all :) I wouldnt dare add an eel in with him. But you may get lucky. There was a member here that grew his out from a few inches, no problems, then one day it snapped and fish were dead. The photos attached is one of my small ones, the one that didn't bother anyone. My big MBU jumped out of the 265 :( Had another monster MBU that died because of a power outage, he was almost as big :(

You can see what I have had success with in my Cenote Tanganyika thread.

I agree about the Fire Eel, by the way: He'll bite it in half.

Our current mbu shares a tank with a panque( approx 5 inches) and a spotted catfish( not sure the L number, but around 5 inches too). There's a couple of ottos in there..

The only problem we've had has been the catfish and panque having a spat until we put more cover in for them. They tend to lurk at the back and scavange once mbu is asleep.

I'd love to get a photo of one of the ottos which thinks that mbu's head is the perfect spot for some R&R..

IN the past I have kept a fahaka with a mbu for around a week..both puffers had been bought as young fish and were incredibly laid back. Our current mbu is far more highly strung..I'm far more careful around him. Indivdual fish temperament tis the key to successful tankmates.

nice mbu...

Is that guy laying on the floor from jumping, or what is the deal there? I hope you didn't do this to take a picture. Sometimes a puffer full of air can't release it, and croaks.

Dam bro that puffer was a beast sorry for the loss but the other guy looks very happy. Very nice to hear all the story's, jenerik I have been looking trough most your threads and have taken alot if info from them.
