Hello. I have an opportunity to acquire a 5” MBU. Would he be a good fit in a South American community tank? It’s comprised mostly of medium growing cichlids (heros, geos), some wide bar silver dollars and some miscellaneous other similar termpermented tank mates. Thanks.

Maybe? They are aggressive and may kill the other inhabitants as it grows. Other concern is bioload as it gets bigger. A single one would require maybe 400 gallons by itself as it approaches 2 feet. Could be an interesting experiment for you as long as you watch closely and have a spare massive tank to put him in if things start getting hairy.

It would be very tough. The MINIMUM pH and gH of a Mbu are the same as the MAXIMUM pH and gH of silver dollars and geos. I would recommend an African community with the Mbu instead.

Thanks everybody. On the forums and internet it seems like everyone is split. Some folks have done it no problem and others it didn’t work out. Cool fish regardless.
