I've seen a few Mbu's and I've noticed what seems to be two different morphs. I've seen all mottled tan and black, and what I'm calling banded. Anyone know anything about patterns on these guys? Here some pics of mine, you can see three bands of black, 4 if you count where the tailfin starts. I havent found a lot of info on these guys past basic maintenance and size and I'm curious if distinct morphs exist.

I don't know about the morphs, I just wanted to tell you he looks great and congrats. I love my fahaka and I want an MBU sometime and I hope mines looks a healthy as yours:headbang2

Puffer is looking good...

I think it's just a matter of the environment they're in. My mbu when on black substrate was fully patterned. When I switched him to white, he exhibited more of the banding that you are describing.

My only comparison has been between the Mbus they get at my lfs and mine but both are on a similar substrate. How quick did yours change?

I had mine with a white sand substrate and he would continuasly changed his pattern depending on his mood.

It just happens from time to time with mine. I think it's to do with the mood of the fish. Sometimes during growth spurts I have noticed fading of the pattern. :)
