Hi I really want to sell on my big cichlids and just keep a mbu puffer in the tank.. Where I live it will take a while to rehome all the fish. Anyway I have a 4x2x2 I can house the mbu in temporarily as its only around 2" problem is the tank is open top. Anybody know if puffers are jumpers or heard any stories of them jumping out of tanks? Many thanks

Welcome to MFK :) Fat Homer Fat Homer he may have the answer for you, personally I never heard of them being jumpers.

From stories i've heard over the years, it seems a lot less likely a large puffer will jump out their tank, unless they are being harrassed or attacked and cant avoid the aggressor, then there have been cases of them jumping out...

It also can help to add some floating plants to give them an extra bit of security...

I just also want to ask, what plans do you have for your final home for this puffer? And when do you think you'll get it up and running?

Thanks for the reply its final home is 8x2.5x2.5 it has been up and running for about 4years but currently has some very large very aggresive cichlids in it which need to be rehomed as the MBU is currently on about 2-3"

My fahaka at 12" jumped out twice from my rimless tank. Maybe three times. I now have an artful acrylics cover. I found him each time and was ok. After the 1st it was waiting for the cover to be built.

He is alone in the tank. I think he got too excited for food even if I wasn't right next to the tank.

^ interesting to know, and good to hear you saved your guy everytime...

Put a light diffuser panel (egg crate) on the tank with some weight on it. I lost a mbu that jumped out from his tank unseen after he apparently was racing to grab a shrimp at the top of the tank. I was in the next aisle and didn't notice that he jumped until it was too late.
