I really want a puffer for my 180 aquarium and the only ones i found that can really live with other fish are sap but i cant find any. So ive been reading on here that mbu puffers have worked with other fish and have only killed on accident. So i guess my question is how long to you think An mbu would be able to live in a 180 before having to upgrade? Ive been planning my upgrade for a while but it might be about two years before i upgrade to the 480. Any help is appreciated. Thanks

You could have one in there for a few years. I think one on here is 3yrs and 25" or close on either end I don't remember exactly.

That's probably my puffer. Regarding the 180, the issue you will run into is not the length of the puffer but the fact that he will get so large that he cannot turn around in the tank. That was the issue we ran into. he had do basically do a "nose-down" three-point turn in the old tank. That was temporary, until the big tank was ready and I really do not recommend folks doing it. Width/surface area is a lot more important for large Mbu than tank length. Hope this helps. They are wonderful fish if you have the room and food for them.

Yeah it was yours. With the 24" width of the 180 it could be in there for a few years. Depending on the growth of the fish. I know arapimag had one that was like 14yrs and 18" or something close to that. He had them in big tanks. Some fish are gonna grow large and others may not.

I love your visual of a mbu doing a 3 point turn..

For people with big puffers, I would encourage you to consider adding some emergent plants to the tank. That is a much more effective form of biological filtration than just canister or wet/dry filters. Google "Pothos+filtration" and see what you get. There is a thread here on this topic that is very interesting.
