I would like to get a mbu puffer. I am not all that familiar with keeping puffers though. I have kept fish for about 5 years now and am currently housing a spotted green puffer.
What size tank should I be looking in order to house it for life? How large will they get? What kind of food do they eat and how much do they consume? How much do they cost?
The most important question though, is this. I plan on purchasing a 300 gallon in about a year (a 150 gal within a month or two.) Now, will a mbu puffer survive (or cause problems) if it were to be house with a clown knife and a royal knife?

Tetraodon mbu or Just Mbu requires a very large aquarium. Good filtration and regular water changes are required since they are messy eaters. Mbu Puffers are sensitive to ammonia and nitrites. They can be a bit Nippy the one in the picture belonged to a friend of mine was huge 22-24" it bit the tail off of a 18" Gar It used to ear hole (in Shell) cockles and Muscles and even crabs. They can get to 30" + so a large tank.(larger the better)

Should go fine with big knives depending on the individual puffer's personality. If it's a bugger then it may have to go on it's own but generally Mbu's are pretty chilled.
I'd say the main problem is feeding time, making sure that the puffer doesn't eat all the food before the other fish get a look-in.
Tank wise, go for a wider tank rather than a tall one to accomodate a potential 30" fish.

How wide do they get? It seems as if the majority of the fish I usually like are long and slender (knives and arowanas.) What exactly would I be getting into in purchasing this fish and what price range would I be looking @?

My last mbu was as big around as my thigh and I'm 6'4", 245lbs. I lost him during my relocation. I just bought two foot-long mbus for $100/ea which is a pretty good deal since that price is usually for much smaller specimens.
