I was wondering if anyone knows of why my Mbu puffer has spent his entire life in basically one spot of the tank. He can swim, but chooses not to all the time. He eats and is healthy but truly never swims around the tank. Hoping that someone can help me out with why my Mbu has never really been a swimmer. He is 6 inches, I have had him since 2-3 inches. Please help and give me advice. Thanks

Thanks for starting your own thread on this. ;)

My 1st question to you would be tank size? Then, please post parameters, water change schedule, feeding, ALL tank mates & anything else you can think of.

Right now he is in a 150 gallon with 2 motoros and a arowana. No one seems to bother him at all. Everyone basically keeps to themselves. He is 6 inches, arowana is close to 12, male marble motoro is 8 inch, female is about 11inches. PH is at 7, temp is 81, amo, nit, everything is 0. Do 25% water change every 5 days. Eats crayfish, snails, silversides, shrimp and krill.
He will occassionaly swim up and down the glass, but NEVER has swam the full length of the tank back and forth and again...... Often, hell just "relax" down on the bottom. I have plenty of water movement in the tank. I would really appreciate the help.

What test kit are you using for nitrate? You should be showing something.

ok.... nitrate is about 30..... was reading wrong................ doing another water change tomorrow............... Should I clean out my eheim pro??? You think its creating excess nitrates?????

Yes, is that the only filtration on that tank? You also need to up your WC to 50% 2x/week. I'm afraid that tank can't handle the bioload. What are your plans for upgrading?

I have many other filters running. That is just the one that I clean the least often. looking into a 8x3x2 tank next. You dont think that would be too much water change and I will stress too much? Probably going to get rid of the arowana. What do you think? Thanks

As long as the fish are used to the water changes, you can change out as much as necessary as often as needed.
Might want to read some experiences from other mbu keepers;

Ok, did another water change we will see how everything goes. The fish are used to the changes, so I think all should be good. I wil keep you posted. Thanks.... If you have any other thoughts I would be very interested to listen to your thoughts.
Thanks

post pics! do you have a barebottom tank or substrate? I am curious bc puffers have a reputation for mistaking the eyes of a ray for snails..
