So since I gave away my fahaka I been itching to get back into puffers. I have a 125 with silver dollars and polypterus I would love to add a six inch Mbu too. Realistically about how much time till the fish outgrows the tank. I can't upgrade for at least three years. I am guessing this won't be doable but never hurts to find out others experience.

In 3 years it will be too big for a 125, plus Mbu should be kept solo.

The Mbu will be fine with the silver dollars or other active fish but I can see bad things happening to the Polypterus (or any other slow, bottom-dwelling fish, for that matter...). Not due to aggression but due to the fact that either the Mbu would "sample" him to see what he is all about or that the Polypterus would do the #1 thing you should not do, which is get between the Mbu and his food at feeding time.

Regarding "how long", he would need a bigger tank before three years. Ours got to about 24" in two years, so you can figure out the math on that.

Good luck in your decision making.
