i have a 3" red zebra, kenyii, yellow lab and a 2" acei. i have had them all since they were very small but for some reason the zebra and kenyii have started to beat up on the acei and when the zebra gets tired of that he chases the lab. i knew when i got the acei that they are not as aggresive and i would have to keep a close eye and now i need to do something. it's only nipping at fins and a little mouthing so far. any suggestions on how to make this a happy fmaily?

For African cichlids, you needs lots of hiding places (to simmer down their aggression). Stack larger rocks in the tank to forms caves and holes for them to hide; or even add pots or pvc pipes.

As for as treating their aggression, I don't know how, other than overstock tank to intimidate the cichlids from attacking. Best way I know of is to add lots of hiding places (one per fish).

I think you just need more fish. You only have 4 in a 45 gallon. I would bump that number up to 7-10.

Mixed tanks can be tricky.45g is on the small side and 4 fish is not enough fish to spread out aggression. So far you are doing good in having fish that arent too similar.Try for 6-10 fish, all males, that are all different.Alot of rockwork is needed. The rocks should reach almost to the surface in at least one place.

i'm pretty sure i should be good in terms enough hiding places for everyone but i just feel like the fish i have greedy about the space they have and adding more will only agrivate the situation. any thoughts on additional fish i could try and add?
