Sand and large boulders make up the majority of the lake. I'd go with like 12-15 mbuna (for life) max for a 55 gallon. Slate will work fine for creating lightweight, space saving caves, but it's very unnatural looking. Gabbro, basalt, granite, and sandstone mini-boulders look much more natural for a rift lake setting/biotope. I have various sizes of dark granite rocks and gravel added to the base of the "boulders" in my Malawi Reef Biotope.
