I’m thinking about doing an Mbuna tank in a 4x2x2. I’m experienced with haps and Vics but not too much with Mbuna. I’m thinking about getting two colonies of 1 male and 5 females of two different types, maybe maison reef zebras and red hongis. I’m not concerned if they interbreed since I’m not doing this to sell them. Does this sound like a sound plan? Any other advice is appreciated or ideas on species.

PS if I get over run with offspring, I have a big jardini and wolf fish to feed them too lol

I would choose one blue barred species per tank, even if you don't mind hybrids, it will help manage aggression and encourage the fish to color up to their full potential if they look nothing alike. I would do 1m:7f for either of those species since they are aggressive and 2 fish in a tank that size will manage aggression better.

Maybe 1m:7f Pseudotropheus cyaneorhabdos Maingano for the 2nd species.

They are hard to get right now, but I do agree. In lieu of the other blue barred species OP wants however.

Thanks for the advice, I think I’m gonna go with a group of Maison reef zebras and cherry red zebras and I was gonna do one female maingano and one female yellow lab to add to the gene pool since I’ll probably end up with some hybrids. Maybe I’ll have some interesting looking fry. If the fry are ugly, my jardini is always hungry lol
