Well I've been lurking awhile. 1st post... How embarrassing! I am in the middle of building a stand for my 240 gallon acrylic tank (8x2x2) and a under stand for my 75g (48x18.5x22) sump and now... The sump won't fit!
I knew I couldn't install from top, back or the ends as I wanted to be able to remove if I had to service. and there isn't enough room to remove from the ends in my living room. I know it's build with 2x4s but it will also be laminated with 3/4" birch plywood for added strength on all 4 sides and on the top. The tank would fit edge to edge on all 4 sides... Any thoughts from the hive???

Thank you,
David

^this exactly
sorry this has nothing to do with the sump but what are you stocking the 240 with? :)

Take the center brace out. I have to take the brace out of one of my stands to get the sump in/out, too. Luckily I've only had to do it a couple times.

I vote for putting it in and never taking it out!!

But I can understand why you do want to be able to remove it if needed. I think you should just beef up the horizontal support under the tank to allow a 4' wide opening so the sumo can slide in and out without having to be angled. As someone suggested even a removeable brace would do the trick, you could simply have it screwed (and not glued) in place, and if ever you need to remove it to take the sump out just drain the tank down to about half the volume so there isn't so much weight on the span.

Offset the center brace instead of having it directly in the center so that one of the openings is large enough to slide the bottom tank in and out when you need to.

So maybe remove the center vertical 2x4, or even hinge it to flip up or down out of the way, and add a 3rd horizantal 2x4 to the top front and back support and then cross brace it again? I could also add a vertical under the end of each of the 2 added top horizantal 2x4s on each end. This would leave well over the 4' needed to slide the sump stright in... I like it.
