Hi,

I have a few HOB filters that take cartridges. My plan is to stop using cartridges and just put some type of sponge material in the cartridge compartment to work as a mech and bio media. Whats the best and cheapest stuff to use?

I have used the foam from the Aquaclear filters before. But I know there has got to be a cheaper alternative.

Thanks

it would help if you told us what kind of filters they are....marineland? do they have a bio-wheel? or aqueon with the little bio plate? or top fin?

if you want crazy cheap, i've tried sponges at the supermarket. not the cellulose ones, the ones that look like sponge filter material

just stuff em with scrubbies from the dollar store

I use 100% Premium Polyesther FiberFill from Walmart(pillow stuffing). A small bag costs around 3 bucks and a big 3lb 2oz bag cost 7.99, should last quite awhile.....I get the big bag, it will last me close to 9months for all 7 HOB's that I have.

If you're interested in quaility over cheap you could use poret foam. The large pore stuff would probably work will in a hob.

i've heard of that site when researching how to make a DIY sponge filter. if it's the same material i bet it would be great media if u have a lot of it :O
