what should i use? an ac 50? or a penguin 200? maby some thing else? i filled the tank to day after i got a stand for it. i didnt think to pick up a filter  so what will work better for mechanical?

I don't care for the serface skimmers personally...They look horrible and you can remove the serface build up in 5 minutes with a piece of paper towl floated in the tank once a month.

From a pruely mechanical standpoint...go with an AC but back it up with an air driven Hydro 3 or 4 for added bio-filtration. A Marineland emporer 400...(around $45.00 on line) ...can do both jobs efficiantly for less money.

Another option for a salt tank that I really like are the Skelter's (combination HOB filter and protien skimmer built in.) I used a few of them over the years and was fairly happy with them.

You hear a lot of opinions about everything in our hobby. "Junk....Crap...Garbage" are fairly common terms that are tossed about (usually by people with no other helpful information)
The skimmer on the skelter isnt the best but that can be corrected easilly with a small air pump...It's well built and has cleanable pad frames along with good water flow. If you look closely at the motor assembly that I've heard complaints about you'll notice that it's exactly the same as those used on all of the Aquaclears and in fact I've interchanged them before.
