So I took out all the pads On my FX5 and I'm just using it for biological filtration. I still have the the big block pads that came with it but with taking the fine filter floss out and the blue filter pads it seems like my water is getting insanely cloudy but my water flow is great now. I have a ton of seachem bio media in there for biological filtration which is working great now my water parameters are starting to look AWESOME best they have been just insanely cloudy water.thought it would clear up but no luck. Another reason why took the filter pads out is that it seems it clogs up way too fast and I get air bubbles trapped inside which in turn I have to leave the filter off for about two minutes and shake it to get all the air bubbles out just for five hours later be clogged up again after only running for a month or so. so I guess my question is are there any really great filters that I can just use for mechanical filtration only to put on my system. I have an Aqua clear 110 and was thinking of loading it with Puritan and just an insane amount of filter floss and maybe taping it shut just to have the most mechanical filtration as possible i know the filter would be slow but then again the mechanical filtration is going to be high any though comments or help with the fx5 would be appreciated.

Very simple DIY mechanical filtration that works amazingly well. Take a fairly small plastic container, like maybe 10"x14"x6", cut a whole in the bottom and install a bulkhead. Attach PVC to the underside of the bulkhead that will flow back into your tank. Get some eggcrate and put that over the bulkhead on the inside. Get some of the blue and white bonded filter pads and put them over the eggcrate, but don't entirely cover all of the egg crate, leave about 1" open on one side.

Now just pump some water into the container, can simply grab a small pump and some 1/2" hose if you want, might want more GPH depending how big your tank is. The water will flow out the bulkhead and back into your tank. The 1" opening on one side will prevent it from overflowing if the bonded filter pads become clogged, and the eggcrate keeps the filter pad from clogging the bulkhead.

I made one of these from my 1500G pond when I couldn't get it's water to completely clear, worked like a charm, keeps the water is crystal clear now.

You could also do that same thing but use filter socks instead. I like filter socks because 100% of the water is being filtered as long as you clean them before they start to overflow.
