I would like the understand the effect that low micron rating mechanical filters have on the aquarium system.

Filter socks are typically 100 - 200 microns. Puro Kleen pond filter material is available with different ratings, like 50 micron, 15 micron and 5 micron.

At what point can the filter start to remove beneficial elements such as bacteria, minerals, and tannins? 5 micron seems too small. Would it be detrimental to use a 15 micron filter in an aquarium? What about 50?

Thanks.

I don't use them myself but am planing on it. From what I understand is 100 and 200 micron are the go to, anything smaller then that and they clog way to quickly. I'm talking about 12 hours to a day

I was thinking about using the 50 micron Puro Kleen as my everyday filter, and keeping some 15 micron around for occasional overnight use when I want extra polishing.

This is the stuff:

I don't see a 100 micron. If the 50 is going to need to be changed more than every 2-4 weeks, then that's probably a no-go. I don't mind rinsing it out once per week though.

If anyone has experience with this stuff, would appreciate some insight. I'm mostly concerned about at what micron level is starts to strip beneficial stuff.
