I have a 125 gal in my bedroom and want to upgrade/change the mechanical filtration on it. I would go to a sump in a heartbeat, but due to noise and location it is 100% out. Currently I have a rainbow FB600 for bio, and two Otto 350gph canisters. The Ottos are very quiet, but a pain to clean and I want to switch out one for a purely mechanical filter and leave the other stuffed with scrubbies for backup bio.

What I am looking for is something that is very easy to clean once a week and just for mechanical. Quietness and easy maintenance are key. The tank is tight to the wall so HOB will not fit.

I was thinking magnum 350 with a micron cartridge, I have a HOT 250 which is OK, but read the 350s can be a pain to clean.

I was also thinking lifeguard mechanical filter, or ocean clear, but since they require external pumps may be a bit louder than a canister.

A third option would be a normal canister stuffed with floss. If I go that route as said before noise and easy maintenance are most important.

What do you guys suggest for just mechanical?

I have an AC on a 55 and like it, but I do not want to move this tank far enough from the wall to clear one. I have it set up with just enough clearance for hoses.

I have two Renas - an XP2 and an XP3 - running on the tank in my bedroom, and they are perfectly silent. And my water is crystal clear at all times, even within a minute or two of feeding. And that's without any extra steps taken for mechanical... just the varying density foam that they sell for them in one or two baskets. I am only experienced with these and an Eheim as canisters go, but I'm very impressed, especially given their low cost (I got the XP3 on sale from Petsmart.com's in-store price matching for something absurd like 70 bucks brand new).

I also have an xp3 and love it. I had a fluval and the rena is by far easier to maintain IMO.
