mechanical filtration

whats a good material to use fr mechanical filtration.
it seems like my material. isnt doing very good at cleaning out the particles. my water is pretty clear. but it has a grip of particles ALWAYS! floating around.
i dont think my mechanical cloth is doing very well.
what a diy material thats good for mechanical? pillow cotton towel?
or whats a good product i could buy. cuz right now the stuff i have isnt cutting it.

Pillow stuffing.

I get mine from Michael's Craft Store. Use the 40-50% off coupon that they have in the Sunday paper (and usually at the store). Cheaper than Wal-Mart and they treat their employees better.
