Mechanical media for an emp400?

I know the question is relative to the person answering but I can appreciate that. That said, for those using emp400's or have in the past, what media do you find makes for the best mechanical filtration in this filter? I'm planning on going to 2 2217's or a 2076 pro3e in the next week or so for biological filtration and am planning to make the emp400 a mechanical work horse on the 75gallon.

I know a lot can be done DIY and that's what I was looking at doing I think. I'm still reading up on it and trying to educate myself a bit, however.
