Hey guys I'm thinking of changing the media on my FX5 for the 225g to all mechanical and changing the Rena Xp4 to all bio cuz the clogging on the Xp4 is making the flowrate weak and it's kind of annoying me. I've read that Renas works good for only bio filtration and will not clog as fast. Now my question is what are good mechanical media for the Fluval Fx5? Does the fine pads and polishing pads work well? What else fluval mech media works well?

all u really need in an fx5 is biomax in the 2 bottom media baskets and leave the top 1 empty. i wouldnt use and extra pads. they just clog. the ones on the side of the basket are enough. if you really want to u can use pre filter in the top but they can slow down gph.

I just go to the LFS & buy a few boxes of whatever media is cheap. Sometimes its Rena, Fluval, whatever. I get some fine, some medium, and some coarse & I just trim it to the shape I need.

What they ^ said.
