What DIY mechanical media should I use for a marineland emperor 400? I was thinking scouring pad, but the first ones I saw had a "not for aquarium use" label on them. Is there a specific brand of scouring pad that's known to be safe for aquarium use? I know some people use them.

I bought these recently instead of buying more replacement cartridges.

the uncut blue bonded pad

and a 100 micron pad

and I use the clam-shell frame from these to hold them together and in place. Note: a 4-pack of these only comes with 1 re-useable clam-shell frame, 1 thin bio-sponge, and 4 filter floss bags of carbon (but I only bought these for the clam-shell frames).

Ive been using that 1" spong style packing foam. you can find it at one of the craft stores. (a.c. moore). works good for me.
