Media for fx5?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
The amount of media you use will depend on your bio load. Do you have any other filters? How many fish and what size? You can probably get away with 2 fx5 if you can keep stable parameters, just do mech filter before bio and i recommend no carbon

I have a fx5 right now, and I have my filter floss pads in the top basket for mechanical, pre filter media and ammocarb in the middle basket, and biorings and lava rock in the last basket. You don't have to use fluvals filter media. I use lava rocks and I know people who use pot scrubbers.

I agree. I have 2 404s and I never buy Fluval media, its over priced. Personally Ive never used ammocarb because I havent had the need but I use a similar set up as manafel. I dont use lava rocks though, and I just use more ceramic. Just keep an eye on your parameters and clarity and adjust the media as needed

I heard that biomax is really good. What about ceramic rings? I want mech and bio filtration at the same time. Trust me if I had the money I would buy fx5 for all my tanks. But I have to do with 1 for now.

It all comes down to the number of fish you'll have and the type of fish you'll have. Different fish prefer certain temperatures and the number of fish dictates how much filtration you need.

If it's planted, the need for more filtration lessens.

Ceramic rings are great I have 4 fx5s and all three baskets are packed with ceramic rings.
