You don't normally replace the Bio Max since you can just rinse it in some aquarium water to get most of the detritus off of it. Now as far as the prefilter media goes, it all really depends on what type of material it's made from, if it's filter wool or floss then you would replace it when ever it get clogged to much and starts to affect the water flow through the filter. How often you will have to replace it depends on your bio-load and the size and type of filter.

Im assuming you are refering to Fluval ones for both

Biomax - A place where bacteria which breaks down ammonia and nitrite colonise. It has a high surface area to volume ratio. Hence it is called your biological filter. Don't need replacement.

Prefilter - A good way of wasting money, Fill it up with more biomax instead

Bio-max is ok, I use it..........The biological filtration should never be cleaned, only when there is a lot of weird build up blocking the water flow should it be washed, but not throughout..........On a wet/dry, use scrubbies in the biological cabin........Scrubbies save the owner lots of money, and do the job it is for perfectly..........

Funny thing is fluval suggests you replace the Biomax like every 6 months. Don't do that. Pure marketing strategy to sell more product. Ive got Biomax almost 5 years old and it still functions perfectly fine.

And like spiritofthesoul said, don't waste your money on the prefilter media. Either add some kind of sponge or floss or more Biomax. More marketing on fluvals part.
