How do you figure out how many gallons of media? I use ceramic rings.

How many rings per gallon?

Does this question make sense?

i never knew it mattered how much bio media to use lol.

This is a good question, but unfortunately, the answer is less straightforward. The reason is because there are so many variables which can affect the efficiency with which the biofilter operates. Nonetheless, I can give you the following number for Ehfisubstrat Pro. I have 12 liters of media supporting a 350 gallon, moderately stocked tank, and my water chemistry is perfect. This works out to approximately 1 liter/30 gallons. To be honest, most of us just empirically detemine what filtration system is likely to be adequate and then max out the biomedia.

I see that question was not clear

When you buy media, they say this will handle x number of gallons, but the media is solid not liquid.

I have a 5 gallon bucket full of ceramic rings and I was wondering how many gallons of media I have.

OK, sorry. If the "volume" of media is not provided, then simply multiply the lxwxh of the box and convert square inches to cubic centimeters.
1,000 cc = 1 liter.

Or, 5 gallons x 8.3 liters/gallon = 41.5 liters
