that depends on what is in your aquarim.but you dont have to change the bio things at all, juss rinse them.

i have a large bio load so i must CLEAN the pads, floss every week, while doing my water changes.

Everyone has a different way of cleaning their filters. I clean mine once a month. I never replace any of my bio media (like lava rocks, cylinders, bio-balls) only rinse it, and I rinse it in tank water. Never rinse it in straight tap water, it kills all of the bacteria. I do however replace the filter pads once and awhile. After all the rubbing and rinsing to get the crud out, you wear them down. I also rinse out the carbon pouches and replace them once every 3 months (I use synthetic carbon) but if you use regular carbon, you should replace it once a month.

Hope this helps!

No. You do need to use the trays. They are designed to make the flow of the water go up into the trays from the bottom. If you take them out and just pack them, you will end up with a big mess, not to mention it would be harder to clean.

How many filters are on that tank? It seems like its a little overloaded. And you will eventually need to get them a much bigger tank. I would actually have 2 filters on there. A canister, and a hang on the back. I am all for proper filtration, and the more the better.
On my 55 gallon, with only plecos, and rainbows, I have a canister and a hang on the back filter. On my other tanks, I have a minimum of 3 filters each...
