i have some neons and blue tetras with what appears to be a small fungus around there mouth... what meds go well in planted tanks. i have tried mela and pimafix but not luck. any suggestions?

Some maracyn and maracyn2 will clear that right up. But you need to remove the fish and place them in a hospital tank. The antibiotics will kill all your beneficial bacteria just the same as it will kill the bacteria that is harming your fish. You will need to treat them for 5-7 days to get totally rid of it. i would keep the hospital tank at around 80 degrees and add some salt as well, about 1-2tbs per 5 gallons.

Howdy,

No point in treating fungus with antibacterial meds!

In general, I'd try whatever meds are available to treat fungal infections. Even though my plants sometimes dislike treatments, they always grew back. My motto is: Fish first!

http://www.thetropicaltank.co.uk/hdcolumn.htm --------------------------------This is the only mouth fungus that I know of. It is actually not a fungus at all. But a bacteria. HARLEY-- If you know of a different true fungus that gets around the mouth of fish please post it up for others to learn from.

I would guess its columnaris. Its a pretty intrusive and contagious disease. I would treat the display tank with the plants to prevent reinfection.
