i've been treating a fish with jungle lifeguard for 5 days. its been said that it would kill my BB so i was ready for a cycle to happen. after the treatment it didnt happen at all, and my qt was good for a week. i started a kanaplex treatment yesterday and i just checked on the tank and the water is cloudy and there is a smell in the air.

since the treatment is ongoing i didn't wanna do a water change so i just added some seachem prime in to help with the ammonia, nitrite and nitrate.

what is my best course of action here? i can do a water change tomorrow when i redose.

Yup water change !!
But what do you suspect you have to go with kanamycin ?

Sent from my GT-I9100G using MonsterAquariaNetwork App

my senegal bichir has been bloated for a long time. almost 4 weeks. only pooped 4 times since then, so i fasted him since he was stopped up, he ate a little bit of shrimp on monday. he also has some septicemia going on at the base of each dorsal finlet and anal fin.

if i do a water change today..how much? 25%? and also...how would this effect my kanaplex treatment? would i have to redose today? instead of tomorrow?

What were you treating with this stuff? Active ingredients on the box says 1-chloro-2,2,5,5-tetramethyl-4-imidazoliinone it's supposed to cure everything according to the advertisement. Sounds more like weed killer, but I know very little about it. The Kana while primarly gram-negative which would normally have less of an effect on your nitrifying bacteria was most likly the nail in the coffin for your BB. I speculate on this but don't know for sure. I would do a large water change asap. Why are you using Kanamycin now? What's wrong with your fish. This type of shotgun approch to using meds usually ends up in a tank full of dead fish.

You now have an ucycled tank. I do not recomend you use any medication in it. Do daily 50% water changes. Monitor your perameters every day untill it re cycles which may take a couple of weeks. Use prime at each water change and you could also add Seachem Stability to help move things along. If you have another tank use some media from an established filter to help seed the tank this will also speed things up. If you want to treat the fish in the mean time use a hospital tank. If this is an option let me know and I'll help you with some treatment options. Otherwise just get the tank cycled asap and we'll tackle the other issues later. You could aslo add 1 tablespoon of aquarium salt per 10 gallons of water to the cycling tank to help the fish get past any ammonia and nitrite related stress.

he is in a hospital tank. been there for 5 weeks now. i have another tank, i'll seed the filter and do a 50% water change. there is already aquarium salt added to the hospital tank as well.

heres a link to the post i had in the Polypterus subforum.

there is a little back story there if it helps with figuring out a treatment anyway.

OK read the thread. I want you to give it an epsom salt bath. 1 teaspoon per gallon in a container of tank water. Put the fish in the container for 15 - 20 mins. Change 50% of the tank water if you haven't yet and after the bath put the fish back into the tank. We are not going to medacate this tank do to the cycling issues. If you can get Meth blue you will do a meth blue/epsom salt bath tomarrow. Keep the tank warm about 82. Let me know how you make out with this and if you get the MB I'll tell you what to do then. For now do the ES bath.

thanks so much for the help. i have to go out and get more epsom salt and get some methylene blue.

will the 1% MB made for microscope staining be too strong?

i did the 50% water change and seeded the filter, i'll update after i do the epsom bath.

No, 1% is fine.
