I had a bonded pair who were very unsuccessful spawning in the 150g. So I moved them to a 45g bowfront. They spawned many times w/ fry, but unsuccessful raising them. This tank had Rio Otapa x. Helleri which the biggest female was about 5” and as big as the female meeki. Not 100% sure why they were unsuccessful, but the bigger swordtails were harder for the meeki to fend off. It is very natural for swordtails to prey on cichlid fry. The male rejected the female and had to separate. The female will recover in the 45g and will introduce her to the 150g when she’s healed.
Included a few pics of the only other tankmates-a guppy and 20YO clown pleco.

I've learned here unfortunately that happens sometimes with a bonded pair especially if you move them.

Yeah that has never worked for me either. Doubt they will ever spawn again.
Not 100% sure why the male rejected that female in the same tank. They were in there for almost a year constantly spawning and one day the male beat up the female. I am guessing it was the amount of unsuccessful spawns.

I saw a young pair of rams at my lfs with the female swollen with eggs, I was thinking about getting them but was thinking they might abort the eggs or they will split. I guess they could have split.

Gorgeous swordtails!

I would allow the recovered female to exist in the 150 for a few months, then try introducing the male into the larger tank. Chances are good they will get along again once she has recovered and they're in a new environment.

Yeah I don’t know if I would buy them. You’re probably better off buying a group. I see pairs sold all the time. Chances of them working out after a move are slim. I do wish I saved the fry and raised them in another tank. They were free swimming.

Edit: the male’s trailers really grew w/out the tetras. Longest I’ve had on a firemouth.
Thanks!
The problem w/ putting the female in the 150g is the tetras nip. Her fins aren’t too bad. Maybe give 2 weeks, lots of water changes will do it. The male is settled in w/ the others w/ zero issues. I introduce at feeding time, which has worked for me for years thanks to Jeff Rapps for the info ?
