I bought a meeki from my local pet store and i thought it would get the red underneath after time. it is now about 2.5" but then i saw these firemouth meeki's at meijer that were about an 1" that had red on the bottom. Will my meeki develop that or is it a different type of meeki, if it is a different type of meeki what will it look like?

they will vary depending on quality. some color up very young, some take longer to color up...some don't ever get much color. What you feed them can help bring out some color. For instance if you feed a lot of krill and shrimp based foods, this might bring the red out more.

The best thing you can do is provide a varied diet and a tank with pristine water and you will get the best out of your firemouth. :)

thank you very much i will try and pick some shrimp up at the local pet store but the hardest part is trying to get him to eat the food cause I have a 6" oscar and a 3" jack dempsey who like to eat all the food. I got the meeki and the jack pretty close to the same time but my jack grows alot fast. I was just looking at my meeki and he is actual only about 1.5" to 2". what is the best way to get my meeki to eat the schrimp with out my other fish eating it all

Best way is to seperate him maybe while you feed him the shrimp? You have a small tank or holding container?

I've seen Thor's not color up due to their tankmates, if they get chased alot they turn more darker grey with black barring, when they are calm they show lighter colors and a red under belly. Regardless, when they get pissed at their tankmates and flare their gills the Thor should show tons of dark red at the gills. If this is not occuring, the gill flaring, your thor is most likely scared.

I dont have a holding tank. My meeki is always whiteas can be. He barely ever gets chased.

Even if he's not getting chased he could be stressed. As juveniles, Thorichthys do best in small groups with some type of schooling or shoaling dither fish...platys or swordtails work great.

the only problem is that until i get a bigger tank my jack ends up killing any new fish. would a green terror and a jaguar chiclid work with my oscar, jack and meeki in the larger tank
