Hi all, new to this forum as well as to monster fish. Long story short, I fell completely in love with these guys and finally decided to just go for it. Got my 2.5 inch baby ocell today :) Currently he's in a 55gal with 6x giant danios roughly his size or a smidge bigger than him. The tank has been established for a while with a fluval 305 for filtration. I plan on adding an additional HOB filter soon. PH is 7.6, zero ammonia and nitrites, nitrates 30ppm just prior to a 60% WC.

The acclimation process went HORRIBLY.

This was the first time I've ordered a fish online and I was such a nervous wreck about it. Shipped 2-day mail and I've been keeping a careful eye on the tracking as I was so anxious to get my baby. I have a newer piece of driftwood in the tank that's going through that awful fuzzy white bacteria business so figured I had time to scrape some of that eyesore off and suck it up while I did a PWC before he got here. As the tank was filling back up, I checked the tracking one more time and it said "delivered- parcel locker"!! I live in the Arizona desert, mind you, and temp was already approaching 100f by then. The thought of my baby roasting in some metal box in the sun about gave me a heart attack. I ran to the mailboxes and the mail woman was still there sorting the mail and hadn't closed up any of the boxes yet so I must have caught the delivery update within minutes. He was in a medium flat rate box with absolutely nothing on it indicating there was a live animal in there. Judging by the dents on the box, I can't even imagine how it must have been handled these past two days.

I got the package home, preparing myself for a DOA. He was double bagged, wrapped in newspaper, and tucked into some styrofoam cut outs.... And he was alive! He had no color to him but I wasn't sure if that was just him or due to his size or what. I was originally planning on setting up a drip acclimation but I was so nervous for him and caught off guard I just didn't want to try fumbling around trying to figure all that out and end up stressing us both to death haha. So I went with the traditional bag in the water method. After about 10 minutes I opened up the bag and started adding the tank water a bit at a time. Actually, I only got to do that twice before the bag tipped over and he went darting out into the tank. Ugh.

He spent maybe 5 minutes in one of the hiding spots I set up and when I checked on him again, he had stripes! He came out and started frolicking around with the danios for a good while. He ate three neon tetras and is now lazing about in one of his hiding spots. Every once in a while he'll come out for a quick stroll and settle back into his spot. Doesn't appear to be super stressed or anything.

I gotta say, seeing this guy in person and not just a picture is absolutely amazing! I love him so much!! image.jpg image.jpg image.jpg image.jpg image.jpg image.jpg

Pardon the ickiness in the pics, there was still a lot of that driftwood fuzz suspended in the water column. There's also bubble bars along the backside of the tank.

Very nice! Looks like he's eating like a champ!
I also just got 6 Ocellaris :) around same size!
Keep us posted

Thanks guys! :) Bacon, I got him from a seller on eBay, called "fishonlinerus".

Well, we made it through the fist 24hrs.. He's been chasing the glass up and down a bit more than I'd like to see, as well doing a good bit of "talking". Upon closer inspection, it looks like he's got a little bit of ich going on. Should be plenty of oxygen in there but I maxed the power on the air pump to be safe and raised the temp from 82 to 86. Debating on adding salt or not. The giant danios all seem to be doing fine.

I added a few 1-1.5" ruby reds last night which he still hasn't touched. Not sure if they might be too big for him? Also had zero interest in the frozen bloodworms. I'll pick up a few more neons this evening since those seem to be more manageable for him. I don't know what else I can feed him?

With a bass that small the temp should stay between 80-86 they're very susceptible to ich. Keep the temps up and give him a little time to settle and he'll start eating for you. Once he's settled try frozen bloodworms and freeze dried krill. I moved my old bass from tank to another and they didn't eat for 2-3 weeks....they just take a little time to settle in.

isde02 isde02 can we expect Mono like growth from the Ocell?

Oh boy, I've mucked everything up! I ended up getting x10 more neons for my little fella, of which he ate one that night. I also added the rest of my minnows and pair of Florida flagfish from my 20gal to make way for a trio of mollies I picked up. I figured at $1/neon I would need to produce some fry of my own to subsidize the cost of buying neons every day. CLEARLY I wasn't thinking about the growth rate of my pbass. The minnows are putting a hurting on that driftwood fuzz so they're for sure staying, but I'll have to figure something out for my flagfish. They seem super happy in the 55 for now though.

I worked a 24hr shift yesterday, when I got home today they all seem to be doing great. I think that bump in temp did wonders. No more visible ich on my baby! I can tell he's been chasing the glass again, his poor lips are all bruised up. My first thought was that he looks like Alice Cooper, so ive started calling him "Alice" now. Which is great because it will still work if he turns out to be a she! I haven't seen him chasing the glass today, been out and about so far all morning. Fingers crossed it stays like that!!

So as of today my stocking is as follows:
1x 2.5" pbass
6x giant danios
12x minnows
2x Florida flagfish
6x neon tetras

Aqadvisor has me around 70% stocked with plenty of filtration still. So now I'll just let nature run its course and see where we end up. Not too worried about an ammonia spike, but I tested this morning just to be safe. PH 7.6, zero ammonia and nitrites, 15ppm nitrates.
