Is a hiding spot a necessary for my irwinii, or will it be ok without.? Ive seen fts on here that have been bare, but I don't want him to get stressed. The spot under the bogwood he currently uses is causing territorial issues with my dats and so I've taken the wood out, thus leaving him with no place to hide.

These fish are nocturnal and like to hide for the daylight hours. I'd add more wood for your dats so he can get some cover. I think once they're over the 12" mark it becomes less of an issue. Mine's around 8" and still loves to hide all day, only coming out for food. If you prefer to have no wood, maybe add some floating plants to help diffuse the lighting.

Post some pics if you have time.

Good advice above. I don't think he'd be way too stressed if you keep the lighting real dim - no lights on the tank and moderate room light. If you do use tank lights, a hiding place becomes more important, perhaps (I am guessing) necessary. One can gauge the stress by their demeanor (requires good experience) and appetite.

2-footers appear to rarely hide, but again, the catfish tanks are generally not lit or at least not lit much.
