I got some melafix as I was told it would help my cories regrow their barbels.. well. I'm a bit weary of using it.. I just wanted to make sure this was normal..theres no kind of seal on the bottle? you can just unscrew it right there at the store?

no plastic around it, no seal like on a soda bottle where it breaks loose, no seal under the cover you have to remove. anyone at the store could put whatever they want in it? someone decides they don't like fish so they put acid in it? someone dumps out all the meds and completely replaces it with something else.... am I the only one uneasy about the packaging?

Also... it smells like vicks vapor rub. That doesn't make me feel better either. Having never used it, I don't know if this is normal or not. I don't want to poison my fish.

I've heard some people say it's killed their betta. It's got some clove oil as an ingredient, I think, so whatever you do you'd be well inspired to really underdose for corys. I've used it on a sick dwarf cory and he died as soon as he hit the tank. I dont' know whether the stress of the move to the hospital tank was the last straw, though, but I have been a little suspicious since.

If I were you? I'd use vitachem. I've had great success at tissue regrowth on bettas with it. I just put some in the water, and some on their food. I respect the recommended doses, but basically no risk of overdose as it's just vitamins. Whatever nutrition they don't need they'll excrete I think.

I have the same problem in one of my tanks and it's because my substrate is too sharp. Any chance of changing to 'fake' sand (it's these mini-beads). They're awesome for the cycle and for plants.

Clove oil is basically an anesthetic and pretty hard to OD on.
I don't use Melafix myself though, never saw a need for it.
