melafix

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I have read a couple double blind tests that found that melafix ,used as directed, over a 5 day test period , caused no reduction in filter colony effectiveness.

on 2 different occasions I was dosing melafix and pimafix together at a half dose and had massive ammonia and nitrite spikes. I don't exactly know what caused it but I am very cautious when using these meds now. also I have never had it work on anything substantial and things like cloud eye and torn fins water changes and salt will help better and safer than melafix.. and in reality in my hospital tank I use maracyn and maracyn II together and it kicks the hell out of most diseases I have encountered and I have never had any problems with my biological filter. I would not however dose an entire tank with these meds unless it was absolutly needed to control an outbrake. just be very cautious with any meds even if used as directed.

melafix is a very good product but many people use it as a cure all, but in reality good tank maintenance is the cure all in every tank. if you need to use melafix either your fish are fighting or your not looking after your fish too well. sayinbg that ive never heard of any issues with it harminfg the tanks balance. its pretty much tee tree oil

I use it for all my fish's injuries and such. I have never lost any good bacteria or anything like that. We have been using it for over a year in my 55 gal.

At our LFS a woman brought in a Bala that outgrew her tank. We bought it, a nice 7 incher and brought it home. After all that moving it was a bit scuffed up and quickly developed a little fin, mouth and eye fungus. Never having tried it before I decided to try Melafix and the condition quickly went away. After 5 days the water parameters were still great, so I went the recomended 7 days and then did a water change. All the fish are doing great, they seemed to enjoy the Melafix 'bath'. I was so greatly impressed with it myself that I tried it on my hemorrhoids with only a small, uh, consequence...

LMAO maybe the dose was wrong
Yeah, uh , maybe. It's... changing me, you know? See, I'm... mmmmmmmmm... developing gills. Down there.

I was just thinking, Ive never used any meds on my fish?

Not for that last 10 years anyway? My Bala Shark nearly spends more time flipping around on the floor then in the tank, and I always just dump him back in, 30 minutes later he's up at the glass taking food and acting as normal! He is the hardiest fish I've ever known! Broken dorsal fin, lots of missing scales, always heals quick and easily with no problems and no meds. If anything I add salt occasionally in low dosages as a preventative and just to help general fish well being ;)
