The male actually changes colors, turns indigo blue/black with off white stripe going across, and off white top. So basically an inverse of the original coloration that the female keeps. Do not keep more than two of these species in a tank unless you are sure that you have at least 4 females per male... the male is very aggressive and territorial in comparison to other african mbuna cichlids. my male showed his mature colors about 2 months ago, and this weekend the male and female were doing the breeding dance, and the female appears to be holding eggs. The Male is chasing every other cichlid that gets close to his female, fish twice his size.
