All the stuff I've read indicates that female Johanni are orange and monchromatic, quite distinct from the male.
I have a fish that looks exactly like a male in coloration but just spit 20 fry... Could it be a male fish that was holding? Anyone ever heard of this?

could you post the pic of male and babies..?

In all probability you've got a female melanochromis cyaneorhabdos ('electric blue johanni'), and not a a melanochromis johanni ('johanni').

M. cyaneorhabdos is a monomorphic species (unlike the dimorphic m. johanni), with males and females bearing a general resemblence to male johanni's.

That would explain it. Thanks kay-bee!

Electric blue johanni is a trade name that sometimes applies to the m. cyaneorhabdos depending on who is selling it.

The pic you have there is M. johanni.

Agree with this competely. You probably have M. cyaneorhabdos and not M. johanni.
