synspillum

because it looks like a synspilus lol. Also melas are usually more orange if not all orange with the black speckles if I'm not mistaken

How can you tell? Just curious.
Yea like sad before because it just is a Synspilum haha. Best thing to do is just use google and compare images. Synspilums are really easy to recognise.

I did and some of the pics show a close resemblance (my fish) and others don't so I thought I would ask around to confirm.

Here is an example http://www.cichlids.com/browse/species/vieja_melanurus.html looks just like my fish.

If your fish is aquarium strain, chances are it is V. synspilum. V. melanurus is not too common in the hobby.

Both species are very similar, and both have a high degree of variability from one individual to the next. The only real way to know, with absolute certainty, would be to know the original collection point of the fish. If it comes from lake Petan then you have V. melanurus, if not, then V. synspilum.

Thought V. melanurus was endemic to lake Peten, but apparently not. The cichlid room companion says it's endemic to Guatamala. Fish base says it is also found in the rio la pasion, so it is found in other Gautamalan bodies of water other then just lake Peten. I know that V. synspillum is found over a larger range, from Mexico, Guatamala, and into Belize, though I am pretty sure neither are found together, in the same lake or river. Anyways, since both are found in different bodies of water, it is likely that there are some distinct strains or regional variants, making distinguishing the 2 fishes all the more difficult and confusing.
