Local fish clubs are a great way to meet other folks in your area interested in aquariums, to buy, sell and trade and to become a better hobbyist.

Many areas have one or more local fish clubs. My local club is the Capital Cichlid Association (www.capitalcichlids.org) but there are also clubs for general aquarists, plant-enthusiasts and marine / reef folks in the DC area. Here's a (partial) list of clubs: http://www.aquaworldaquarium.com/Local_Fish_Clubs.htm

Most clubs have monthly meetings featuring speakers, mini-auctions and other activities (group buys, raffles, grow out contests, etc.)....as well as larger events (weekend shows, all day auctions, etc.). While it's not the only reason to be a member, I've had access to some amazing fish, aquariums and supplies at a fraction of the price of LFS prices and without the, uh, issues of Craigslist.

I've been a member of fish clubs for almost as long as I've been in the hobby. Some are better than others but a few enthusiastic folks can make a big difference.

Are you a member of a fish club? Why or why not?

If there's not one in your area, why don't you start one?

Matt

Was a member of the North Jersey Aquarium Society til I moved to Cali. Then, I became a member of the San Diego Tropical Fish Society for 15 years. Now, in AL, there are no fish clubs in the area. Bummer. Tried starting a club in MS. No one showed up to the invitational meeting both times I advertised one. Haven't tried here in AL yet.

I'm an active memebr of the Circle City Aquarium Club - CCAC. We just put on the ACA! Great club with great membership.

There is one at my school. I joined it, the purpose of the clun is too set up and maintain aquariums around the school.

We have a general club here in KC. I belonged back in the 90's, moved away and now back. Just started going again. I have enjoyed the 2 meetings that I went to, and met some really great people. They bring a speaker in nearly every month. The last was Ken Davis doing a presentation on collecting in Honduras. Also belonged to the one in Dallas in the 80's, it was very active.
