Local fish clubs are a great way to meet other folks in your area interested in aquariums, to buy, sell and trade and to become a better hobbyist.
Many areas have one or more local fish clubs. My local club is the Capital Cichlid Association (www.capitalcichlids.org) but there are also clubs for general aquarists, plant-enthusiasts and marine / reef folks in the DC area. Here's a (partial) list of clubs: http://www.aquaworldaquarium.com/Local_Fish_Clubs.htm
Most clubs have monthly meetings featuring speakers, mini-auctions and other activities (group buys, raffles, grow out contests, etc.)....as well as larger events (weekend shows, all day auctions, etc.). While it's not the only reason to be a member, I've had access to some amazing fish, aquariums and supplies at a fraction of the price of LFS prices and without the, uh, issues of Craigslist.
I've been a member of fish clubs for almost as long as I've been in the hobby. Some are better than others but a few enthusiastic folks can make a big difference.
Are you a member of a fish club? Why or why not?
If there's not one in your area, why don't you start one?
