I have a flowerhorn who is living in a 10 gallon tank growout tank (she was a half inch when I got her). She's now around 2.5 inches and needs to move out. Unfortunately, her 30 gallon tank I was going to move her into holds some fish that I can't move (I was planning on moving them, but it turns out my cichlids have a taste for corydoras flesh). I will be buying her a 55 gallon when I have finished collecting the money in a few weeks.

My question is, I have a 55 now with a blood parrot, a couple of firemouths, and a convict in there. Do you think I could move Mercy (she's around 2 inches, and the smallest fish in there is a firemouth that is about the same size) for a few weeks until I can afford her new tank? Or should I leave her in the 10 gallon a bit longer?

Btw, the subject was a bad pun. Her name is Mercy.

At 2.5" you might be ok. I used to have a female that was real peaceful at that size. In fact, I kept her with 4 1.5" EBJD's in 46 bowfront for a few months with no problems. My brother has her now. She is a close to 5" and a complete beast.

at that size you should be cool. However, she's been alone awhile. As us FH keepers always say..ya' just never know how they're gonna act.

She did have a baby blood parrot in there for awhile that she liked, but due to my horrible eyesight I can't see ick (it was quarantined first, but apparently not for long enough) and he ended up dieing. But she did like him, so I'm hoping that's a good sign? I guess I'll move her down when I have several hours to watch her. Thanks for the help guys!

You never mentioned how big the convict & bp are.... If there's a decent difference in size, I might worry.

The largest fish in the tank is one of the firemouths, and I would guess he's around 3.5-4 inches at a glance. Everybody else is in the 2 range. The blood parrot spends most of his time inside a goofy Spongebob Squarepants tiki mask, if that gives you an idea on his size. He likes to stare out of the eyesockets, and if another fish hangs out by the mask too long he chases it off. Then he comes out at night for the big fishie pile of cuddley sleep. Its beyond cute.

Anyway, the larger male firemouth is the only one who I think could hurt him, and he's only shown aggression against female fish he could possibly breed with. I call Mercy a "her", but I really have no idea what her sex is - I guessed it from the look on her face (hey, at a half inch, that's as scientific as anything else >_>).

Edit:
Actually, now that I think about it, the convict might be close to three inches, but he doesn't appear to be aggressive. Whenever the blood parrot challenges him over rights to the tiki mask, you can practically see him roll his eyes while he swims off.

I apologize for the blurriness, but this was the only photo I could find with all four cichlids. I'm not sure if that mask is the best thing to reference size on, but I guess its better than nothing.

And this is a sideways shot of Mercy. Absolutely nothing to reference her size in there really, but she is really hard to photograph. I swear she waits til right before the camera is about to go off and then she darts away.
