I got a water turtle for Christmas and I got him in a 10 gallon with gravel and a little island to go onto. Anything you guys can tell me about caring for them? First time I have had a turtle in years.

Needs bigger tank, filter, heat and UVB lights...

post up pics.. Merry Christmas to you too

i can't post pics, no camera, and i will see if i can get UVB bulbs and it has a heater.

ill try to get a bigger tank soon and a filter.

what kind of filter should i get?

what kind of filter should i get?
One that's rated for a tank twice as large as the one you have/are going to house him in soon. Turtles are much messier than most fish, so the filter needs to be overkill.

Also, you might want to remove the gravel. Substrates with particles smaller than the turtle's head tend to get eaten occasionally. It causes impaction and the turtle can die from the substrate building up in the digestive tract. Either swap the gravel for large river rocks (or a substrate larger than its head), or go with the bare bottom approach (the tank not you!).

All the best with it,
Paul

I'm not 100% sure of it's exact species. Just a water turtle. Has spots on it's belly if that helps any. I'll try to get a 20gal or 30gal, bare-bottom, soon.

Should the filter be a fully submersible? Or can the water be high enough for a HOB.

is its stomach yellow or red and does it have red streaks on the side of its head? give a good description and we can ID him for you. what does his carapace look like?

stomach is a pale yellow and yes red stripes on the side of his/her head

carapace is what lol
