If you haven't already guessed... yes it's a bloody aweful idea but they were mounted when i got the hood and never thought anything of it. Until tonight and I'm so annoyed with myself for not thinknig about it sooner.
My largest wolf (11") frequently jumps but has never hit the hood... until tonight, where rather than striking the relatively soft, flat underside of the hoot, he struck the bulb and the metal mounting bracket that holds the 48" long bulb in place.
Thankfully, he didn't smash the bulb but the contact he made with the metal bracket wasn't very pleasant and has left a considerable gash above his tail. Bugger.
However, he doesn't seem too phased by it and has happily fed and is still quite content patroling the tank but i guess this is a lesson I shouldn't have needed to learn- comon sense failed me... this time.
I'll be correcting that tomorrow but felt like posting to vent some annoyance...
