well. been working on this plan for this tank for a couple days now. i think i pretty much got it the way it should be. the 3/8 thick glass might not be strong enough. the frame is 2x1/4" thick angle bar. that **** is NOT going to bend. just to make sure, it has a few reinforcements. a bar in the middle on both sides, 2 bars on the top (making 3 pc hood), bottom, and back. 3/4" plywood with 1/2" foam, 4 layers of fiberglass. and the reinforce bars are hardened 1/2" thick flat bar. tank frame dimensions are: 6' long, 4' wide, 3.5' tall - all hardened steel.
got to go to work @tm, so im going to post up the floor plan i have. kinda show u more of what its about. and ill check the forum on my breaks to see what u all think. more pictures of the back 2morrow.

well just noticed u can't really read what is in red...so it says "the cut out section is just to show what is inside the black painted fiberglass. the white stuff is the 1/2" foam for insulation and the brown is the 3/4" plywood"

Just wondering..... Why metal frame, and wooden panels? Why not all glass?

Good idea so far man. Your idea is inspirational to what I want to do in the future for my house. I will be following your build closely and learn.

I, however want to make metal frame with all glass.

Keep up the good work man.

agreed on glass thickness, im using 3/4 acrylic for a 29" height. Also i think you should add some more of the 1/2'' hardened flat stock to the sides. I placed supports every 7.5'' with a similar 1/2''x1/2'' square stock around the back and sides of my tank.

the reason im not going all glass is simple. COST - COST - COST. @ 560 USD for 1 pc 5'10" x 3'4" - i refuse to pay that. so here is the new plan. same design, maybe more bracing. trying to replace the plywood with this plated pvc stuff @ work thats 3/4" thick. that stuff is 10x stronger/harder than wood. new dimensions will be (as of right now) 8' long, 4' wide. 2.5' tall. @ 2.5' tall i should be able to run 3/8 glass no problem. as long as the fish i want dont get pissed and knock the hell out of it. even if it does - should still be alright. posting pics of the new mock up soon...

If your using PVC you should look into heat welding the seams. this is what i am doing for my polypropolene. John PTc was the originator for this design, you should really check out his 800 build. I will be finishing my build within the next month, keep an eye out and learn from my mistakes.
