The cheap MH floodlights usually have a much smaller reflector than aquarium or "grow" type fixtures. This leads to "hot spots" and uneven light distribution.
Also, most of these fixtures have the ballast/bulb in one fixture. Having a remote ballast allows you to keep the sensitive electrical parts away from moisture. A remote ballast also will greatly reduce heat buildup over the tank.
I would bite the bullet and invest in some quality fixtures.
