At my desk
Tank is freshwater, depth is 3ft. I have no plans for plants. Is there any benefit to using 250W or is 150W sufficient?

It sounds like overkill. Although I do like the way the light shimmers with MH.

yeah 150w should be fine. id imagine the reason for using MH is the stunning shimmering effect you get in the water that only these lights produce. beautiful. its like the HID lighting in luxury cars

i prefer the ambience acheived with a powerful point light vs the sterile hospital feel of florescent lighting.

I use 150w for my 30 inch deep tank and it's plenty. You only need the high wattage for deep water when you have coral. It is overkill, but man is it pretty. The light is so crisp and clear with 10k bulbs.

You will have a greater selection of bulbs with 175 watt MH's. You can go with a $25.00 5500K, a $75.00 6700K grow-bulb, or a $100.00 10,000K-12,000K reef bulb. I would recommend a mogul-base, as they are widely available at home-improvement stores.
